Seeds, Cuttings, Bulbs, and Runners

Plants grow from seeds, but that’s not the only way a new plant can form!

Plants can also grow asexually, from cuttings, bulbs, tubers, or runners. Click through the slides to learn more.

A cutting is when a piece of a parent plant is taken and put in the right conditions for it to produce roots and develop into an independent plant.

Some plants have bulbs. Bulbs contain the complete life cycle of a plant in an underground storage structure. They have a period of growth, and then they become dormant until the season is right for them to grow again. Examples of bulbs include daffodils and tulips.

Tubers

A tuber is a plant structure that is modified to store nutrients. These storage units allow plants to survive winter or dry months until the proper growing season. Potatoes, sweet potatoes, and yams are examples of tubers.

Runners

Runners are shoots a plant sends out horizontally above the ground. These shoots, or stems, can produce new plants with roots and shoots. Examples of plants that use runners to multiply include strawberries, ivy, and spider plants.
