Seed Collection

You will get to eat your way through this activity!

Goal:

Goal:

fruit faceSeeds germinate and sprout, and then they grow into seedlings. Next they become young adult plants. Finally, they become adult plants that can grow flowers. When some flowers are pollinated, they turn into fruit. Fruit contains seeds. Ripe fruit can fall to the ground. The seeds inside can then grow into new plants and start the life cycle of the plant again.

Try It! (optional)

  1. Start a seed collection from the fruits and vegetables you eat!
  2. Eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. Count the total number of seeds in each specimen.
  3. Save 2–3 seeds from each fruit or vegetable. If the seed is large (like an avocado), one is plenty.
  4. Make a display that shows the seed, records the total number of seeds in the specimen, and then shows a drawing or photo of the plant the seed will become. Also include anything unique you learn about each plant’s life cycle. Include at least five different types of fruits and vegetables.
  5. You may wish to add a few nuts to the mix, as well!
