How often do you read?

Reading is something you do every day--probably many times throughout the day. You read maps and street signs to make sure you are going in the right direction, instructions to complete a task correctly, a recipe to bake something delicious, and text messages to stay connected with your friends.

For each type of text that you encounter, there are different strategies that can help you fully comprehend what you read. You rely on a different set of skills when you flip through a magazine, for instance, than when you study the lyrics to your favorite song.

Throughout this first lesson, you’ll reflect on the reading (and writing) strategies you already use. To grow as a reader and writer, of course, you’ll need to learn new strategies that will help you tackle anything you encounter, even very difficult texts and assignments. Our language arts course will help you do just that--you’ll become wiser with words, whether you’re reading them or writing them.
