He was a wandering scholar who worried about China’s troubles. Rather than a religion, Confucius taught a code of behavior.
The story of the birth of Confucius is full of mystery. It is said that when his mother was large with child, she saw five aged men leading a unicorn toward her. The unicorn spit out a piece of jade at her feet. On the jade was written the promise that her child would be a “king without a crown.” When it was time for the baby to be born, his mother took refuge in a cave which was protected by dragons. Spirits of nature rejoiced and welcomed the child when he was born.
As he reached adulthood, Confucius was very concerned about the state of disarray he saw in his country, and decided to become a teacher. He taught writing and mathematics, but also felt that people should learn to be virtuous, and to live a life of harmony. He was willing to teach anyone, as long as they were serious about learning.
