In recent years, the water bottle has become a very popular product. Water bottles can be made from plastic, glass, or metal. While each of these has benefits, there are also drawbacks. Glass can break and plastic water bottles do not decompose (break down) when thrown away, contributing to the problems that we are creating for our environment. One answer to this problem is to make water bottles out of metal. In order to use metals, manufacturers have to know how the metals will react with water.

In this lesson you will learn how some metals react with water and how to use the periodic table to predict the reactions.

A Metal water bottle and a plastic water bottle.

Question

Why is metal a good choice for reusable water bottles instead of glass or plastic?

Glass can break, and plastics do not decompose and are bad for the environment. Metal does not have these issues.
