What are lines of symmetry?

Goal: Identify lines of symmetry

This heart is partitioned into halves. Both of its sides are the same size! The dotted line that divides this heart in half is called a line of symmetry. A line of symmetry is a line that divides an object into equal parts.

Heart with line of symmetry in middle.

We know this is a line of symmetry because the heart can be folded along the line and both sides are the same. We can say, “This shape is symmetrical!”

Half of heart with dotted line on edge and arrow indicating a fold.

Which shape has a line of symmetry?

Pink square with dashed line digagonally across shape.

This is not a line of symmetry because it does not partition the square in two equal parts.

Blue triangle with dashed line down middle.

This is a line of symmetry because it partitions the triangle into two equal parts!
