Choose your fabric colors.

Choose two colors of felt that you think work well together. The felt pieces should be at least 6”x8”, and one should be a whole piece. The other color can be a scrap or have a part cut out of it.

Fold and sew one edge of the felt.

Using the whole piece of felt, fold one of the long edges over about ½ inch. Pin it down to make it easier to sew. Then, sew a straight stitch along the open edge of the fold to hold it down. Do not sew up the ends! This is where the drawstring will go. That will make it easy to get the clothes on and off the puppet.

Pull yarn through the tube you sewed.

Use a yarn needle (a large, blunt needle) or a safety pin attached to the end of the yarn to pull a length of yarn through the opening. This is the drawstring.

Pull the drawstring tightly and cut out arm holes.

Pull the yarn together so that the two ends meet completely. Tie a bow in the yarn. Place the clothing on your hand, as shown. Then, feel for where your thumb and pinky finger are on either side. Use scissors to snip a hole on each side. Make sure the holes are big enough for your thumb and pinky to get through. You have made a cape for your puppet!

Measure the second color of felt.

Now, place the corner of your second color at the point where your drawstring comes together. Tuck this piece of felt inside and mark where the cape’s edges meet the fabric.

Cut the second color and place it.

Cut straight across the second color of felt to make a triangle. This will be the shirt that goes under the cape.

Sew the pieces together and finish the outfit.

Sew the second color into place with a straight stitch. You can add buttons, jewels, sequins, or feathers to your clothing if you wish!

You have made your first piece of puppet clothing. Put this outfit someplace safe. You will use it later when you make your clay puppet head! Send a picture of your puppet fashion to your teacher.
