Sometimes you will sort items that share the same trait. A trait is
something that objects
have in common. To sort them, we can use a Venn diagram. Look below to see what a Venn
diagram looks like!
We can sort objects with two different traits on the outside circles. When objects share both
of the traits, we place them in the middle. Let’s create Venn diagrams with the balloons
from the birthday party! Click through the slides below to learn how.
Let’s take another look at the balloons from the birthday party.
We want to find out how to sort the balloons by blue balloons and small
balloons. When we use a Venn diagram, we start by labeling the sections.
Look at the Venn diagram below that we will use to sort the balloons.
Our labels show us that our small balloons will go on the left. The blue
balloons will go on the right. The balloons that share those traits because
they are small AND blue will go in the middle!
Keep going to start sorting the balloons into the Venn diagram!
Look at each balloon one at a time, and ask yourself if the balloon is small,
blue, or both small and blue.
If it is small and not blue, it will go on the left.
If it is blue but not small, it will go on the right.
If it is small and blue, it will go in the middle.
Let’s start on the left, and work our way to the right. How would you
describe the first balloon?
This one is blue but not small. It goes on the right in the diagram.
Now, look at the balloons we have left. What about the next balloon? How
would you describe that one?
This balloon is small and not blue.
Where in the diagram would this balloon go?
Since it is small but not blue, it will go on the left in the
diagram.
Keep moving to place more balloons in the diagram.
Let’s try one more together. Look at the circled balloon.
Where would you put this balloon? Why?
This balloon would go in the middle! That’s because it is
both small and blue.
Move on to finish the Venn diagram!
Look at the remaining balloons.
Decide where each of these balloons go in the Venn diagram. Then, click the
diagram to check your work.
Slide:
Which cat below would go in the middle of a Venn diagram because it has the shared trait?
Incorrect.
The orange cat would go on the left, because it is
orange and
not
white.
Incorrect.
The white cat would go on the right, because it is
white and not orange.
Correct!
This cat shares the same trait as both other cats,
because he is orange AND white! This cat goes in the middle of the Venn
diagram!
