Make a Circle

Begin by tracing a circle that is about 5-6 inches in diameter onto a piece of cardboard. You can trace a medium-sized lid or bowl or use a compass like the one shown above to create your circle Carefully cut out your circle. Hint: Cardboard from cereal boxes works best because it is thin, yet strong.

Cut the Holders

After you cut out your circle, use your pencil to create small marks that are evenly spaced around the outside. The best way to do this is to make marks opposite each other and then turn the circle and make two more marks. Keep doing this until you have 8 evenly spaced lines.

Make a Hole

Have an adult help make a hole in the middle of your circle by pushing a pencil through the cardboard. This hole needs to be as big around as a pencil so that your bracelet can feed through it.

Prepare Your Threads

Cut seven strands of different colors of embroidery floss or yarn that are all about the same length. Then, tie them together with a knot. Push the knot through the hole in the middle of the circle so that the strands are hanging out towards you.

Place Thread

Stick each color of embroidery thread into its own slot. One slot won’t have thread. This slot is where you will move the thread to weave.

Weave

You are ready to weave! Move every third strand to the empty slot. In the picture, you can see how the gold strand moves to fill the empty slot. Next, the light blue strand would fill the empty spot. Keep turning the circle and move every third strand as you go. Your bracelet will start to appear on the backside of your circle, coming down from the hole.

Finish

Test your bracelet to be sure it is long enough to fit around your wrist. Carefully remove the strands of embroidery floss from their holders and pull the bracelet through the hole. Then, tie the open end together so that it doesn’t become unraveled. Finally, trim the ends Make sure you leave enough so that you can tie your bracelet around your wrist!

Try It On

Have an adult help you tie your bracelet around your wrist. Make sure to leave it large enough so that you can slip it on and off! Tie a strong knot and then trim the ends.

You have completed your bracelet! Now that you have a great tool, you can easily make another bracelet for a friend! Who will you make one for? Send a picture of one of your bracelets to your teacher!
