How do I relate skip counting to counting minutes on a clock?

Goal: Relate skip counting by 5s to
telling time.
Logan knows that he can skip count by 5s to help him tell time.
Every number on the clock represents 5 minutes. Can you help
Logan skip count and find the missing number?
Logan is excited to use his knowledge of skip counting by 5s to

counting by 5s to tell time!
Let’s first explore the two different types of clocks!
Analog Clock
An analog clock is a tool for
measuring time with hands for hours, minutes, and
sometimes seconds. The shorter hand tells the
hour. The longer hand tells the minutes.
Analog clocks do NOT show a.m. or p.m. The 24 hour day
is divided into 2 twelve hour periods. One is a.m.,
which means “before midday.” This would include
anytime from 12 o’clock midnight through 12 o’clock
noon. After 12 ‘o’clock noon, it is p.m. which means
“after midday.” These 12 hours are from noon until
midnight.
A digital clock is a tool for
measuring time that shows hours and minutes using
digits. a.m. stands for before noon, and p.m.
stands for afternoon.
Digital Clock
Let’s review how we can count by 5s on an analog clock.
The analog clock has 12 numbers around the edge that
represent 5-minute intervals. Between those numbers are
dots or lines that represent single minutes.
For example, 1 represents 5 minutes, 2 represents 10
minutes, and so on. Since there are 12 numbers, that
means there are 60 minutes in an hour.

What time does the analog clock show?
The long hand is on the number 3, and the short hand is
slightly past the 3.
Look at the highlighted area. It is 15 minutes after 3.
You can also say “quarter past 3,” “quarter after 3,” or
“3:15.”
What time does the digital clock show?
This digital clock shows 3:15 p.m.
Let’s look at another clock. We see that half of the
clock is highlighted. The long hand is on the 6, and the
short hand is between 10 and 11. If we skip count by 5s
for each number 1 through 6, we will count 5, 10, 15,
20, 25, 30. This clock is showing 30 minutes after 10.
The time is half past 10, or 10:30.
On a digital clock, the numbers show 10:30 p.m.
Let’s practice telling time on an analog clock and a
digital clock.
On the analog clock, the hour hand (shorter hand) is
slightly past the 7, and the minute hand (longer hand)
is slightly past 30 minutes. It is pointing at 2 dots
past the 6. We can count each line as a single minute.
We can count 7:30, 7:31, 7:32. The time is 7:32!
We can show the same time on a digital clock with
numbers. The digital clock shows 7:32 a.m.
