Mime Time

Let’s watch a video about reading and writing the time!
Watch this video to learn all about telling and writing time.
It’s Mime Time! See the mime and his clock. He will not speak but he will show you with
his arm and hand what time it is. Just watch him and the clock hands and you will know
the time.
First, look at the short hand on the clock and the mime’s hand. This always tells the
hour.
The short hand, called the hour hand, is pointing to the 2 so we know the hour is
2.
We will write 2 for the hour and then a colon.
Second, look at the long hand on the clock and the mime’s arm- they are pointing at the
12. When the long hand, called the minute hand, is pointing at the 12, it is on the
hour. So, it is 2 o’clock.
We will write “zero zero” after the colon to show 2 o’clock.
Look! The mime and clock have moved their hands. What time is it now? Start with the
short hand, the hour hand. Where is the hour hand pointing to?
Yes, the hand is pointing between the 8 and the 9. It’s not to the 9 yet, so we know the
hour is 8. Let’s write that before the colon.
Look at the mime’s arm and the clock’s long hand, the minute hand. What number is being
pointed to? Correct, the 6. Each number on the clock represents 5 minutes, so let’s
count by five 6 times to see how many minutes have passed.
5…10…15…20…25…30. 30! 30 minutes have passed. The clock shows the time is 8:30.
The minutes are always written after the colon so we will write 30.
Great job!
The mime wants me to remind you of 4 things before you go.
Number 1- The short hand of the clock is called the hour hand. It tells what hour it is.
We write this before the colon.
Number 2-The long hand is called the minute hand. It tells how many minutes have
passed.
Number 3- When the minute hand is on the 12, the time is on the hour. Write 00 after the
colon.
Number 4- When the minute hand is on the 6, 30 minutes have passed. Write 30 after the
colon.
And now he wants a high five. That was a fun Mime Time!
