Color
Fig 2.1. The Color Wheel.
Color is a property of light and a valuable tool for many visual artists. Artists can add color to artwork through pigments (paints or dyes), by choosing objects that are naturally colored, or by using lights. There are three aspects of color that help explain how it functions in art: hue, value, and intensity. The hue is the color's name, such as blue, azure, or teal.
Colors are often arranged on a color wheel to demonstrate their relationship to one another. Red, blue, and yellow are primary colors. Primary colors cannot be created from a mixture of other colors, and all other hues are derived from the primary colors. On a simple color wheel, the colors in between the primary colors are called secondary colors: green, orange, and purple. These colors can be created by mixing two primary colors. For example, purple is created by mixing red and blue.
