What kinds of phenomena occur in the sun?

There are several types of interactions that can happen in the Sun. Use the slideshow to explore these different phenomena.

Sunspots

Sunspots are magnetic storms on the photosphere which appear as dark areas. Sunspots appear and disappear in eleven-year cycles.

Solar Flares

Solar flares are explosions on the surface of the Sun, where intense magnetic fields pass through the photosphere to link the corona to the solar interior. Solar flares are powered by the sudden release of magnetic energy stored in the corona, called coronal mass ejections. Solar flares can travel far and fast and even interrupt communication networks, like cell phone signals, here on Earth.

Solar Wind

Solar wind is the result of gas expansion in the corona. It really is not like wind we have here on Earth. Solar wind is streams of charged particles, released from the Sun's corona.
