How do people respond to patterns?

What patterns have you observed in the world around you? You may have noticed patterns in numbers, in peoples' behavior, in the weather, or in the designs created by artists and architects. When you observe a pattern, you can use inductive reasoning to tell what may appear or happen next. In geometry, that kind of prediction is called a conjecture. Try making a conjecture about each of these images. Then click the image to compare your conjecture to ours.

Question

How do you know if a conjecture is true?

One way to find out is to wait and see what happens next. Does the pattern continue as you expected it to?

Another approach is to prove the conjecture is true, using logical reasoning.
