Do you remember some of the major industries you learned about earlier?

What are some major industries in the U.S. and where are they located? Most states in the U.S. have many industries like the ones you learned about earlier, but some states are leaders in an industry. Why? How can a state like Texas, for example, be a leader in the oil and gas industry, a leader in the agriculture and farming industry, and a leader in the energy industry?

If you think this is possible because of a state's location, you would be right. Some regions of the U.S. have more natural resources than others. These resources can help industries flourish in some areas and not in others.

Climate and transportation can also affect an industry. An area, such as northern Nevada which is home to the Great Basin Desert, isn't going to have an agriculture industry because the climate there is too dry and hot to grow crops.

As you learn about some major industries in different parts of the U.S., think about the natural resources in your state. How do they impact local industries?

Dirt road in the Nevada desert, USA.
Californian farm, organic farming in California.
