How are hills created?

Walking up Snowdonia Hills, Wales. Redhill/Surrey, UK A hill is a naturally occurring landform that extends above its surrounding area. Hills are not as high or rugged as mountains, but like mountains, they often have a summit, or a highest point.

There are two different ways hills are formed. Hills can be created when faults come together and move up higher than they had previously been. A fault is a crack in Earth's crust where movement occurs.

The process of erosion is another way some hills are formed. Erosion occurs when pieces of rock, soil, and sediment get moved from one location and are deposited somewhere else. This material builds up near a hill, causing its growth. Also, if worn down by erosion, a mountain may transform into a hill.
