In the 1900s, schools changed again. There were both public and private schools. If you had a lot of money, you could go to a private school. Your parents paid the teacher, and it was usually held in a few rooms of a house. Boys and girls were taught separately. Public schools were free and had lots of students in each class, separated by grade level. Although boys and girls were schooled together, students with different skin colors usually were not. Separate schools were built.
People were immigrating to America from all over the world. Public schools started offering special classes to teach English, as well as American politics and values.
Some children could not go to school because they had to work at home with their parents.
There were still a lot of rural communities and farming in the country, but there were also major cities that were growing. For example, New York City's population grew three times from 1875 to 1900. Many people were leaving their countries by ship to come to the United States to live the American Dream. People from the same country often lived near each other in the same neighborhoods. Some places were called after their original countries, such as Little Germany, Little Italy, and Chinatown.
