Repeated Subtraction

As you heard in the video segment, division is a shortcut for repeated subtraction.

Goal:

Goal:

If you want to see how many 6's there are in 24, you could do repeated subtraction until you get down to 0:

  • 24 - 6 = 18
  • 18 - 6 = 12
  • 12 - 6 = 6
  • 6 - 6 = 0

As you can see, you can subtract 6 from 24 four times to get to 0. This means that 24 ÷ 6 = 4. However, this process would take a very long time, especially if you were dividing something like 762 ÷ 5. It would be something like this:

  • 762 - 5 = 757
  • 757 - 5 = 752
  • 752 - 5 = 747
  • 747 - 5 = 742
  • 742 - 5 = 737
and so on…..
