Division concepts. When we divide things we are splitting them up into equal groups. There are some important key words to be familiar with in order to divide numbers.
Dividend, divisor, and quotient. What do those terms mean? The dividend is the number we are dividing up. The divisor is the number we are dividing by. And the quotient is the answer.
6 divided by 2 equals 3. This is the same problem written 2 ways. The same number is begin divided up. It’s called the dividend. Can you find the dividend? 6 is the number being divided up so it’s the dividend in this problem. The divisor is the number we are dividing by. What number are we dividing by? 2. So 2 is the divisor. The quotient of a division problem is the answer. What is the answer in these equations? 3. So 3 is the quotient.
40 divided by 8 equals 5. What number is the dividend? Remember it’s the number we are dividing up. 40. What number is the divisor or number we are dividing by? 8. What number is the quotient, or answer? 5.
Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. There is a relationship among these operation that can help us solve problems. Addition and subtraction are opposites. Look at the example. 5 + 4 = 9 is the opposite of 9 – 5 = 4. Multiplication is a short cut for repeated addition. Like this. 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 =20. A short cut to that is to write 5 x 4 = 20. Let’s look at the relationships division has. Division is the opposite of multiplication. 5 x 4 = 20 is the opposite of 20 divided by 5 equals 4. Division for subtraction is as multiplication is for addition. A what? It’s a short cut for repeated subtraction. 20 – 5 = 15, 15 – 5 = 10, 10 – 5 = 5, 5 – 5 = 0.
