Goal:
Yesterday, you picked your
animal for your descriptive paragraph and you filled out your
prewrite paper with details. Please find that paper now. You will need it to
write your rough draft.
Now, let's go through the steps of writing your rough draft together. Go through each step on the tabs below.

Let's start with a title. What
animal did you choose to write about?
You could just name your paragraph after your animal, but you could also add some excitement to it.
My Cuddly
Companion
Busy Beavers
The Wildest Animal at the Zoo
The World's Largest Mammal
Can you come up with a creative
title for your paragraph? Write your title now.
We need to begin our paragraph
with a topic sentence. This sentence states the topic, which is your animal. Here
are some example topic sentences.
My cat is my
best friend in the whole world.
Beavers are the hardest working animals in the world.
Tigers may be fierce, but they are amazing animals.
Now it's your
turn! Introduce your paragraph by writing your topic sentence.
Now it's time to
add some details. Take a look at the questions you answered on your prewrite
worksheet. These will help you build the body of your paragraph.
How
do you know this animal?
This will help your readers understand why you chose this animal.
What does the animal look and feel like?
Details, details, and more details!
How does the animal act?
Even more details!
How does the animal make you feel?
This will also help the reader understand why you picked this animal to write about.
It's your turn!
Write the body of your paragraph. Remember to include as many details as you can.
This is a descriptive paragraph, so it should describe your animal very clearly.
Let's wrap up
your paragraph by writing a closing sentence. You are reminding the reader what your
paragraph was about.
Let's look at some examples.
My cat may be
a little crazy, but he's my best friend.
The next time you see a beaver, give him a pat on the back for all his hard work.
While I know I'll never be able to have a tiger as a pet, they will always be my favorite animal to visit at the zoo.
Think about how
you want to end your paragraph, and add your closing sentence.
When you have finished
your rough draft, please keep it in a safe place. We will be editing our rough drafts
tomorrow.
