Human Features

Regions throughout the world are areas of land divided by physical, human, and environmental characteristics. Earlier, you learned about the five regions of the U.S. as defined by their physical and geographical locations.

Perhaps you have heard of these regions, too: New England and Mid-Atlantic. They are human regions that are defined by common human characteristics. Study the slides below to learn about some of most important human regions in the United States.

Mid-Atlantic Region Click image to enlarge. Located in the middle of the East Coast (part of the Northeast and Southeast Regions), are the states of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia, and West Virginia. This diverse region has had a large influence on U.S. history, culture, and industry. New England Region Click image to enlarge. Located in the northeast corner of the U.S., New England includes the states of Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. These states were part of the original 13 colonies. It is the smallest region of the United States. Southwest Region Click image to enlarge. This region borders Mexico to the south. Because of this, the culture is very diverse.
