John Adams was an intelligent, thoughtful political leader who helped America gain its independence from England. His influence helped persuade Congress to declare independence, and he also helped Thomas Jefferson draft the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Adams was elected as the vice president of George Washington (the first U.S. president) in 1789 and again in 1792. In 1797, he was elected the second president of the United States.

Thomas Jefferson

In 1776, Thomas Jefferson wrote most of the Declaration of Independence, which declared that the colonies were independent from Great Britain. He strongly supported democracy and was a cofounder of the Democratic-Republican Party. Jefferson was elected as the third U.S. president, serving from 1801 to 1809.

John Marshall

John Marshall (1755-1835), Supreme Court Chief Justice (1800-1835), engraving published 1859.

John Marshall was a leader in the judicial system. As a lawyer and judge, he stressed the importance of federal laws over state laws. As a result, he helped establish a strong Supreme Court system. He was a firm believer in the U.S. Constitution and was one of the longest serving judges in the nation's history.
