Cloud Formations

Here is another fun activity--can you observe the different cloud formations and figure out the wind direction?

Steps:

Child's drawing of clouds in the sky
  1. On a piece of blue construction paper, recreate the cloud formations you see using cotton and glue.
  2. Compare your representation to the descriptions of cloud formations here in your lesson. Ask your teacher to write the type of cloud under your representation, trace over their words, and then glue the "cloud" into your science main lesson book. What were the basic weather conditions that day?
  3. Look at your compass or the compass rose here. Review the directions north, south, east, and west from last week. Compass Rose See if you can discover which way the wind is moving. You may have to use your compass to find north and work from there. Try noticing the way the trees are blowing in order to guess wind direction. Hold your wind vane, or a sock or flag, in the air. (What are other ways you might better determine wind direction?) Find out the direction the wind is coming from and then determine which way it is blowing. Write these directions down under your cloud picture. (Example: If the wind is coming from the north and blowing south, you might write "N to S" or draw the compass rose and then draw an arrow showing the direction of the wind.)
