Ice cream shop front

This ice cream shop wants students to get straight A’s. If you bring in your report card at the end of the school year with all A’s, all you need is a quarter and you will get a dish with 3 scoops of ice cream!

2

Report card with all A’s and a quarter

We have what we need. Let’s go!

3

Inside the ice cream shop zoomed in on lots of flavors

Each flavor costs less than 10 cents. Let’s see how much different combinations will cost.

4

An ice cream dish with three scoops: the first scoop is 4, the second is 3, the third is 8.

Chocolate is 4 cents, vanilla is 3 cents, and rocky road is 8 cents. How much will this dish be? There are 3 ways to add 3. The first way is to add the numbers left to right. What is 4 + 3?

5

A seven appears on the dish.

Yes, the answer is 7. Now we will add the next number.

6

The dish reads 7 + 8 =.

What is 7 + 8?

7

We see 7 + 8 = 15.

Terrific! This dish of ice cream would be 15 cents. Let’s try another combination.

8

A new dish of ice cream with the following scoops: 6, 5 and 5.

Cookies and cream is 6 cents and strawberry is 5 cents. I really like strawberry so we will do 2 scoops of strawberry ice cream. How much will this cost? We can look for an easy fact that we already know. There’s a doubles fact! What is 5 + 5?

9

A ten appears on the dish.

Great! 5 + 5 is 10. Now we just have to add the third number.

10

We see 10 + 6 =

What is 10 + 6?

11

We see 10 + 6 = 16

Yes! This dish of ice cream will cost 16 cents. Let’s do one more.

12

A new dish of ice cream with the following scoops: 3, 9 and 5.

Vanilla is 3 cents, bubble gum 9 cents, and strawberry is 5 cents.  How much will this cost? Another way to solve this addition problem is to add the first and the third numbers together. What is 3 + 5?

13

An 8 appears on the dish.

Correct- 3 + 5 = 8. Now we will add 9 to 8.

14

We see 8 + 9 =

What is 8 + 9?

15

We see 8 + 9 = 17

Excellent! This costs 17 cents.

16

All three of the ice cream dishes together.

Which of these ice cream dishes would you choose to buy? That looks delicious! I’ll get the spoons and then we can dig in!

“I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!”
