The North and South American continents were not always home to the many different peoples who live here today.

Land bridge Ancient people migrated from Asia many thousands of years ago, traveling throughout North and South America, carrying their cultures with them and adapting to the lands they discovered. Historians believe these people walked across a small bridge of land that is now covered by water. Today, that area is called the Bering Strait.

Look up the Bering Strait on a map to get an idea of where it is.

These travelers from Asia settled all over North America. Their descendants are known now as the many different tribes of Native Americans.

Long before people populated North and South America, wild horses lived on the North American continent. Their fossils have been found by scientists. Very early horses were quite different from the horses seen today: they were less than a foot tall. Fossils found of later horses were larger, and the horses of today are even bigger.
