The United States has treaties with many different countries around the world. Treaties help establish strong relationships with other countries, allowing them to work together for the common good of all. France is one of the countries with which the U.S. has treaties.
During the Revolutionary War, the American colonies were fighting for their freedom from England. After the U.S. won this war, they needed an ally, or friend. France, a country in Europe, was already an enemy of England. Because of this, it made sense for the U.S. and France to create an alliance. In this agreement, each country pledged to protect the other from Great Britain if another conflict arose.
The Treaty of Amity and Commerce and the Treaty of Alliance were established between the newly independent United States and France.
| Treaty of Amity and Commerce | This was a commercial treaty establishing friendship and trade between the two countries. |
| Treaty of Alliance | This was a military alliance pledging military support and security to both France and the U.S. against Great Britain. |
