Other Types of Sequences
Can you find the next number?

Goal:
Not all number sequences are arithmetic number sequences, which change by the same amount each time. Even though other types of number sequences follow a pattern, they don't change by the same amount between the terms as arithmetic sequences do.
For each of these examples, try to figure out the rule to find the next number in the sequence. Then, click the Show Me button to reveal the answer.
Example 1: What is the rule in this sequence? What is the next term?
2, 4, 8, 16, 32…
The rule is to multiply by 2. 32 x 2 = 64, so the next term is 64.
Example 2: What is the rule in this sequence? What is the next term?
1, 3, 9, 27, 81…
This rule is to multiply by 3. 81 x 3 = 243, so the next term is 243.
