Rivers and oceans are flowing-water systems. Lakes and ponds are standing-water systems. A lake is deeper than a pond and may be fed by an underground water source. A pond is shallow, and sunlight can touch every part of a pond.

Question
What does it mean to be a flowing-water system and a standing-water system?
A flowing-water system has water that is moving constantly, either as rushing water of a river or as waves in an ocean. Standing water, like that found in ponds and lakes, does not move in a regular pattern like ocean waves or a river current.
