Here is another way to subtract.

While you are learning subtraction, you could use a subtraction table to help you. Simply "look up" the answer.
For example, here is a subtraction table up to six:

To subtract 5 - 1, start with the first number, the minuend "5". Find that row on the table.

Then move along to the "1" column.

You find the answer "4". So 5 - 1 = 4.
