A contraction is the combining of two words to make one shorter word. One of our spelling words this week is an example of a contraction.
|
An apostrophe (') is used to take the place of a letter. This makes a new word.
Today, we are going to look at not contractions.
The apostrophe (') takes the place of the o.
Example 1
We are not going to the store today.
We aren't going to the store today.
Example 2
The girl is not able to walk the dog this evening.
The girl isn't able to walk the dog this evening.
Question
How can we change the bold words below into a contraction?
We had not thought to bring the chairs inside before it started to rain.
We hadn't thought to bring the chairs inside before it started to rain.
Combine had and not by replacing the o with an apostrophe (').
