Affixes
Let’s take a ride on the affixes choo choo train!
An affix is a group of letters that we add to the front or back of a word to change its meaning.
Read the word on the train for me.
Now let’s add one type of affix, a suffix, which goes at the end of the word.
When we add the suffix “e-d” to the end of jump, it reads jumped. The “ed” makes jump past tense, meaning it already happened.
Let’s look at the verb, cycle, meaning to ride or pedal. We can change the meaning by adding another type of affix, a prefix , which goes at the beginning of the word.
Let's put the prefix bi in front of the word cycle. Bi means two so how many wheels are on a bi-cycle?
Yes, there are two wheels on a bicycle.
Let’s change the prefix in front of cycle to tri. What word is it now?
Tri-cycle! Tri means three so how many wheels are on a tricycle?
Excellent! There are three wheels on a tricycle. You are learning how these prefixes change the word cycle.
What if we added the prefix, uni, to the word cycle. Uni means 1. So how many wheels are on a unicycle?
Yes, one! Uni changed the word to mean one wheel.
This is too fun! Let’s change the meaning of the word- cycle- with a different prefix.
Let’s put the prefix, motor, in front of cycle, which makes which word?
Motorcycle.
Now it’s a motorized cycle that you don’t have to pedal, the engine or motor moves it!
Let’s add the letter “s” to the end of the word. What word is it now?
Yes- motorcycles.
Do you remember what it means when we add the letter “s” to the end of a word?
You remembered! An “s” at the end means more than 1. Touch your favorite motorcycle.
I hope you enjoyed your ride on the Affixes Choo Choo Train!
