When you open the pages of a book, you can go anywhere.
A non-fiction book could take you to a different place in history.
A storybook could take you to a faraway land in a fairytale, or a little closer to home.
Let’s take a closer look at different types of texts.
What is this?
We call this a poem.
Say the word with me, “poem”.
Poems are shorter than stories and sometimes rhyme.
Do you know the poem, “Mary Had a Little Lamb?”
Please say the first verse along with me if you know it.
“Mary had a little lamb,
Its fleece was white as snow.
And everywhere that Mary went,
The lamb was sure to go.”
This is a storybook. A story is longer than a poem.
“Little Red Riding Hood” is a story. It does not have true facts, it is fiction.
What is your favorite story?
Some classic storybooks are “Goldilocks and the Three Bears,” “Alice and Wonderland” and “Hansel and Gretel.”
One more type of book is non-fiction. These are books with true facts that teach us.
Say the word with me, “non-fiction”.
This non-fiction book teaches us about ponds.
Here is a non-fiction book about Space.
This non-fiction book will teach us how to play soccer.
Poetry, storybooks, and non-fiction… what will you read next?
Let’s go!
