Let’s learn how to count the syllables, or units of sounds, in words.
First, put your hand flat under your chin like this. Let’s say the word pickle together, “pickle”.
Did you feel your jaw move? It moves for each syllable. How many syllables were in pickle?
Say the word again, “pi-ckle”.
Our jaws moved 2 times, so there are 2 syllables in pickle.
Let’s try another word together, say “pig” with me. “Pig”.
How many times did your jaw move? “Pig”.
Our jaws moved only one time, so there is one syllable in pig.
Let’s try the word, pizza.
Ready, “pizza”.
How many syllables are in “pi-zza”?
Pizza has 2 syllables.
Let’s try one more. Is your hand ready and under your chin?
Let’s say the word pot. “Pot”.
How many syllables are in “pot”?
Pot has 1 syllable.
Go pick two more things in your home and tell your parents how many syllables are in the words.
Counting syllables is fun!
