Comparing Ways to Show Tone

 

Study the two following pictures of the same building landscape to compare the differences in the use of cut paper and pen lines.

Notice in the second picture that when the artist works with cut paper, the dark shapes are solid black tones.

Pen Line Tones

In the picture below when the artist draws the same picture in pen and ink, he uses a fine-pointed tool to build the dark tones with closely spaced lines.

Can you see that the same shapes are dark in both pictures? Can you see that the same shapes are light? The pattern of light and dark shapes has been changed only slightly. The arrangement of dark and light values is mainly the same in both pictures.
