Every day is full of events. However, many of the events in your life are not necessarily ones that you will remember--you may not even think of them as events. You wake up, you eat breakfast, and then go to school or perhaps hang out with friends or do some chores. Unless something unusual happens, you may describe the day as uneventful.

A story is different. Even though some of the events in a story may seem unimportant, they have been selected by the storyteller for a reason. Someone who tells or writes a story is looking ahead to what will happen next, and usually he or she has an end in mind. In this way, a storyteller is building the narrative's plot, a series of events chosen and arranged in a way that accomplishes the story's effect on its audience.
