Why does art vary so much in appearance?

Have you ever looked at a painting and noticed that its beauty is not a result of the subject itself–the person, scene, or landscape--but of the way the artist has painted the subject? Painters use different brush strokes, lighting, angles, and colors to create artwork. Often you can recognize a specific painter’s work by looking at the techniques, or special processes, that were used to make the painting. For instance, most adults can identify a painting by Picasso or van Gogh, regardless of the subject, because the techniques used by these artists are so defined. Click each painting to learn a little bit about that artist's "signature" technique.

The fact that artists use different techniques to produce different results is one reason why art is so interesting. A paintbrush in the hand of five different painters will produce five very different results!

Question

Can you think of any other professions in which different techniques produce different “artistic” results?

There are many different professions that produce “artistic” differences--architecture, poetry, graphic design, film making, sculpture, illustration, and fiction writing.
