Personality Survey

Am I well-suited to take an online course?

Goal:

Goal:

Anyone can be successful in an online course, but not all of us are well-equipped with our existing skills to do so. Sometimes, we need a little help or a few new skills. Take this brief survey to see how well-suited you are. Don't worry. If you don't do well, you can work on improving in some areas before you begin your course.

My technology access is best described as:

  1. I have a computer at home with Internet access, and I have my own e-mail account.
  2. I have a school computer with Internet access, have my own e-mail account, and have permission to download files.
  3. I have a computer and internet connection, but I do not have an email address.

Great! You’ll need to be able to download course material, get assignments, and communicate with other students and your teacher.

Great! You’ll need to be able to download course material, get assignments, and communicate with other students and your teacher.

You will need your own email address to communicate with your teacher and to receive school updates. Please talk to your mentor about getting one.

My technology skills are:

  1. Very good. I can use e-mail, Web browsers, and word-processing software; I can download files and create attachments. I like trying to solve technology problems on my own and don't get frustrated easily.
  2. Very basic. I have used e-mail, Web browsers, and word-processing software, but I get frustrated when things don't work the way they should.
  3. Average. I can use e-mail, Web browsers, and word-processing software. I don't feel comfortable solving technology problems on my own.

Great! These are all skills that will be needed in any course you take.

Please Note: You may need to get more comfortable working online and develop technical problem-solving skills.

It’s good you understand these basic skills, and it would be wise to have a backup plan in case you have technology problems. Be sure to keep our Help Desk information handy.

I am taking an online course because:

  1. I've taken an online class before and enjoyed the experience.
  2. I'm curious about online classes and have room in my schedule.
  3. I need the class for a graduation requirement, and I can't fit it in to my regular schedule.

Super! Although classes may greatly vary, you have a general idea of what to expect.

Great! You will want to watch all the tutorial videos here and ask lots of questions as they arise.

Online courses can fulfill this need, but be ready to work! Squeezing a course into an already packed schedule is not a good idea, especially if it is your first online course.

When I need help in class:

  1. I feel comfortable asking questions and asking for help.
  2. I hesitate to ask questions of my teacher, but I will ask for help if I need it.
  3. I often feel intimidated asking questions or asking for help.

Great. It is your responsibility to speak up if you have any questions or concerns. Since your teacher cannot see your face daily, this may be the only way your teacher knows that you need help.

Great, it’s good that you realize when it is important to speak up. It’s likely that if your teacher doesn’t hear from you, he/she will assume you’re doing fine.

It is important that you contact your teacher if you’re having any sort of problem. If you’re not likely to do this, you may not have the most successful experience.

I would describe my personal style as:

  1. Self-motivated, self-disciplined, and organized.
  2. Motivated, but I need help remembering assignments and due dates.
  3. Spontaneous and not too disciplined-- I need someone to motivate me and help me stay on top of my coursework.

It sounds like you are ready for this experience.

It sounds like you really want to do well. Make use of your built-in to-do list and calendar in BrainHoney, and you will be just fine.

If you tend to procrastinate, you need to be very careful and change your ways. Online classes often require you to regularly participate in discussions and assignments within the classroom. Also, in online classes, you have only yourself to rely on and can fall behind quickly!

When it comes to analyzing class materials and expressing my own opinions about them, I feel…

  1. I can analyze class materials and formulate opinions on what I've learned without any trouble. I enjoy it.
  2. I can sometimes analyze class materials and form opinions, but it is a struggle for me.
  3. I would rather do this with a group guiding me; analyzing material is not something I do well at all, and I do not enjoy it.

Many online classes require you to evaluate material and give your opinion. You may enjoy this opportunity to express yourself and participate in discussions with other classmates.

You’ll need to spend the extra time it takes to understand the material well enough to express your own opinion about it. Since you can already do it sometimes, it will just take a little extra effort.

You will need to gain this skill in order to be successful. As you encounter assignments that are challenging for you, please contact your teacher for tips on how to complete them well.
