You learned several different types of energy.

Bicycle and rider showing gears You learned the laws of thermodynamics, which tell us about conservation of energy (energy can never be destroyed or created), and that when energy changes form, it always gives off some heat. Now we will look at another aspect of energy: how it moves.

There are two ways that energy can move. One way for energy to get from one place to another is when matter is moved through the forces of work or movement. For example, machines transfer energy from one place to another through work and movement. When you ride a bicycle, the energy of your legs is transferred to the pedals of your bike, and is then transferred through motion and work to the wheels of your bicycle. When you hit a tennis ball, your arm and tennis racket transfer energy from your body to the tennis ball.

Transfer of Energy

If you hit a golf ball how is energy transferred?

Energy is transferred from your body, through the club to the ball.
