It is usually thought of as having two dimensions, either as depth and width, or height and width. An inclined plane is a flat surface that is sloped or tilted at an angle. We will learn about several different types of inclined planes, including ramps, screws, and wedges.
A ramp is a common example of an inclined plane. It is easier to walk up a ramp than it is to climb a ladder. It is usually easier to push or pull a heavy object up a ramp than it is to lift it.
It takes a certain amount of work to raise an object to a particular height. Let’s say that you need to lift a 50 lb box of books 5 feet up. You could lift it straight up or you could build a ramp and push it up. Which would be easiest? A ramp doesn’t change the amount of work that is done, but it does change the way in which the work is done. What happens when you use a ramp? In order to understand why it is easier to push a box of books up a ramp instead of lifting it, let’s look at the idea of mechanical advantage.
