A plane is a flat surface like a board.

It is usually thought of as having two dimensions, either as depth and width, or height and width. An inclined plane is a flat surface that is sloped or tilted at an angle. We will learn about several different types of inclined planes, including ramps, screws, and wedges.

A ramp is a common example of an inclined plane. It is easier to walk up a ramp than it is to climb a ladder. It is usually easier to push or pull a heavy object up a ramp than it is to lift it.

It takes a certain amount of work to raise an object to a particular height. Let’s say that you need to lift a 50 lb box of books 5 feet up. You could lift it straight up or you could build a ramp and push it up. Which would be easiest? A ramp doesn’t change the amount of work that is done, but it does change the way in which the work is done. What happens when you use a ramp? In order to understand why it is easier to push a box of books up a ramp instead of lifting it, let’s look at the idea of mechanical advantage.

Inclined plane

What is an example of how inclined planes are used in day to day life?

An example would be handicap ramps allow wheelchairs to access areas that would otherwise be off limits because a person could not life the weight of the handicap person, but can push the person up an incline.
