What is force? A force is a push or pull on an object. To describe a force accurately, you must know how large the force is and in what direction it is acting. You must know, for example, in what direction you are pushing, and how hard you are pushing in order to describe your pushing force. When you push against a wall, you say that your force is “acting upon” the wall.
The direction of the force may be to the left or right, up or down. The amount, or magnitude, of a force is how strong the force is. The magnitude of force plus its direction, can be represented by a vector. A force vector is represented by a line with an arrow at the end. The direction of the arrow indicates the direction of the force. The length of the arrow indicates the magnitude of the force. The magnitude of the force always includes the units in which the force is measured. For example, the force might be 5 newtons or 10 newtons.
