Sometimes it is useful to know how long it takes to do some particular work. A forklift may spend all day lifting crates of goods being delivered to a warehouse and stack them in another room. But what if the warehouse manager wants the work to go faster? If the warehouse manager needs to have the work done faster, she may have to buy a more powerful forklift, or perhaps even a second one. She would need to get more power. The chemical energy stored in a tree by sunlight through photosynthesis over the life of the tree is released when the wood is burned. A powerful forest fire could burn the entire tree in just 10 minutes. If the wood is burned slowly over time, such as in a woodstove, it is a less powerful fire.The rate (how fast) of doing work is called power. Power is defined as how much work is done during a certain amount of time.
