Sound Activity

In this lesson you will learn about the speed of sound. Complete the following activity to get started.

Think about how sound is traveling as you do the following activity.

Make a “telephone” and talk to friend. Gather about ten meters of string and two paper cups. Punch holes in the bottom of each cup and put the end of the string through the bottom of the cup (the end of the string should now be inside the cup). Tie a knot. Now you hold one end of the string and have a friend take the other and walk away until the string is tight. Try talking to each other, using a normal tone of voice. Now do the same thing, but this time use tin cans (with one end open) instead of paper cups. Write up your experiment and describe your results: Can you hear each other through the cup? How about the can? Why?
