Transmitted Sound

Some media do not transmit sound waves very well.

Speed of sound explanation Think of the times that you may have buried your head in a pillow in order to block out the sound of a storm, someone’s snoring, or of music in your brother’s room. Does your pillow transmit sound waves well? No! Instead of transmitting sound waves, it absorbs sound waves, letting you sleep in peace and quiet. The energy of the sound is absorbed by soft objects, such as pillows and curtains, and irregularly shaped objects.

Hard objects and flat surfaces tend to transmit or reflect sound waves, or even amplify them. We will learn more about how sound waves interact with different media later.
