Now that you have learned about acceleration, complete the following activity.

Gum This lab activity involves speed and acceleration of chewing bubble gum. You will write a lab report on this activity.

You will need a piece of bubble gum and the bubble gum data table to complete this lab.

Part A Chomper challenge

  1. For this experiment, you will conduct five trials be determine the number of chomps you can do in 30 seconds.
  2. Use a stopwatch to determine the number of chomps you can do in 30 seconds.
  3. Record your data in chart A.
  4. Repeat step 2 and 3 for five trials.
  5. Calculate your average speed for each trial, then overall.

Part B: Speedy Chompers

  1. Use a stopwatch to determine the number of chomps you can do in 1 minute. As the time reaches each point.
  2. Record your data in table B
  3. Calculate your chomping speed at each point (20 seconds, 40 seconds, and 60 seconds) using the data from your experiment.
  4. Record your data in table C.

In your conclusion include:

  • the number of chomps you could do in five minutes, one hour or one day based on your average chomping speed.
  • Did you maintain a constant chew rate in part B or did you accelerate?
