First we will examine kinetic and potential energy using a yo-yo.
Wind the string up on your yo-yo and place it in your hand. Place the sting around your finger and begin to play yo-yo. As the yo-yo is sitting in your hand before you let go it has potential energy (It can move, but is not). As you release the yo-yo it the energy is converted from potential energy to kinetic energy. Once the yo-yo is falling it has kinetic energy.
