The Susquehannock
The Susquehannock were a confederacy of at least five tribes with more than 20 villages. For a time, the Susquehannock were the most formidable tribes of the mid-Atlantic region.

Susquehannock means "people of the muddy river." They lived as far north as New York and as far south as Virginia. They have been described as aggressive and warlike and were the bitter enemies of the Iroquois. Captain John Smith was impressed with their deep voices and their size.
They used canoes for transportation and traveled down the Delaware River attacking the Delaware Tribes, and down the Susquehanna River to attack the tribes along the way. They went as far south as the Chesapeake Bay where the Powhatan lived.
The Susquehannock lived in a number of large, fortified villages. They farmed and fished. After planting in the spring, they temporarily moved to the Chesapeake Bay to fish and then returned in the fall to harvest their crops and hunt.
