Have you ever had a guest who was surprised by one of your family’s routines? Or have you ever been surprised by something your host did―something that seemed completely normal to them? If so, the two of you felt the kind of difference that Peace Corps volunteers and their hosts experience often: a type of cultural difference.
Even if you haven’t had this kind of experience, you can probably imagine what it would be like to have someone visit you from an entirely different culture, such as a different country. Locate your file containing this module’s journal assignment, paste the prompt below at the end of the document, and label the entry with this lesson’s title. Then, type a response to the prompt.
- Step 1: Describe something about your own culture that a visitor might find different and interesting. Use very specific details―imagery that will help your reader see what it’s like to live where you do or how you do.
- Step 2: Rewrite your answer as a poem. Arrange your sentences into lines and stanzas, and add any lines needed to help your poem make its message clear. Then, give your poem a title.
When you have written a complete and detailed answer to the journal prompt, save the file so that you can open it again for the next lesson with a journal assignment. (You will submit your journal to your teacher for grading once or twice during the module.)
