Most French students’ class schedules would look quite different than Pierre’s. In France, students take about two and half to three hours for lunch, from around 12:00 to 3:00. Shops and stores close at this time too. In general, the French appreciate their food and don’t want to rush their meals. Taking the time to share a meal is a social event and a large part of French culture. This cultural practice spread to many of France’s former colonies in Africa and around the tropics, where people also choose to rest at this time, the hottest part of the day. The Spanish call this a siesta.
