How does the author introduce new characters?

In Scene 1, you saw glimpses of Skye’s conflict with her mother. Skye wants to be free to do what she likes to do and eat what she likes to eat.

Mama sets rules and requirements that Skye finds restrictive. Gram is Skye’s ally and seems to wish that Mama would lighten up on Skye.

In Scene 2, Arwen and Callen appear out of nowhere in their old-fashioned clothes―literally jumping from the bushes and yelling SURPRISE! They seem unrelated to the play’s action so far, yet something is vaguely familiar about their interactions with each other. These two questions might help you figure it out. Answer each question in your own words. Then, compare your answers to the samples at the end of the activity.

As Callen’s big sister, Arwen disapproves of his pushiness and lack of self-restraint. She is constantly trying to keep him in line.

Both Arwen and Callen want Skye to come home with them to play with their toys. Although Arwen gets annoyed with Callen, she also shares his love of fun to some extent.
