In this lesson you will learn about Sir Issac Newton. Complete this exploratory activity about Newton first law of motion.

Isaac Newton was one of the most influential scientists in history.  He was responsible for formulating the laws of motion.  You are going to explore the first law of motion, objects at motion stays in motions with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.

Take a rolling ball.

Rolling ball

What happens to the ball? Does it ever stop or does it continue forever?

The ball will continue on its path until it bumps into something (like a wall).

Bumping into a wall

What happens when the ball bumps into a wall or a desk?

The ball stops or changes direction.

This is an example of Newton's first law of motion. The ball continues to be in motion until it is acted on by an unbalanced force. In this example the unbalanced force is the wall or desk that it bumps into.

Explain how Newton's first law of motions is working in a soccer game when a ball is kicked at someone.
